Red Light Traffic Cameras Could Get Green Light From Massachusetts Senate
BOSTON (CBS) - If you run a red light it could soon be caught on camera and cost you $25.
State Senator William Brownsberger is the driving force behind legislation that if passed would allow cities and towns to install red light cameras.
They would look for things like drivers running lights, speeding and making illegal right turns.
"The goal is to extend the ability to actually enforce the laws because there is just so many violations that are not getting attended to," said Brownsberger.
A photo would only be taken of the back of the car. The ticket then goes to the registered owner and won't impact any insurance.
"So this is the key we're very concerned to keep this reasonable and not over burden people," said Brownsberger.
Under the proposal, any intersection that has a red light camera will also have to a sign warning drivers the cameras are in use.
"Too many people go through red lights, too many accidents so I think it's a great idea," said Watertown resident Barbara White.
"I think it's a terrible idea," said Belmont resident Bob Collins.
The senate will take up the bill late next week.
