Quincy Firefighters Rescue Fisherman Trapped In Mud

QUINCY (CBS) -- Firefighters rescued a man who was trapped in the mud while fishing in Quincy.

Fire officials say the man was fishing in the mud near Furnace Brook Parkway around 7 a.m. Thursday when he got stuck.  The man used his cell phone to call the fire department for help.

Two firefighters wearing water survival suits used ropes and ground ladders to traverse the mud and pull the man to safety.

Dep. Fire Chief Paul Griffith said the situation could have been worse.

"The mud is very slippery and it doesn't support weight at all," said Griffith.

"He was lucky enough he could pull himself up. The mud does create a suction."

No one was hurt. The fisherman declined medical treatment and said all he wanted was to be able to head to work.
