Police: Worcester Man Holds 6-Year-Old Son Hostage
WORCESTER (CBS) -- A Worcester man surrendered to police Saturday afternoon after allegedly holding his 6-year-old son hostage in his apartment.
Worcester Police responded to Upland Gardens housing complex at 8:30a.m. on Saturday where a mother and her 18-year-old son reportedly told police the mother's boyfriend was holding the couple's 6-year-old boy in the apartment and refusing to let him out.
The 18-year-old told police that when he came home 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, his mother's boyfriend took him to his mother's bedroom where he found his mother on the floor with her arms tied together. The mother told police her live-in boyfriend was drunk and had a handgun in his waistband. He allegedly tied her up Friday evening after they got into an argument.
Police would not release the name of the suspect and victims.
The officer who responded to the scene was also told that the man had fired his gun into the floor two separate times during the night. The man allegedly allowed his girlfriend and her 18-year-old son to leave the apartment around 8:00a.m. on Sunday but would not allow the couple's 6-year-old son to leave.
Worcester Police S.W.A.T team and hostage negotiators were able to talk the man into coming out of the apartment with his son. No one was harmed during the overnight incident and the subsequent standoff. The man was taken to UMass Medical Center to undergo a mental health evaluation. He also faces domestic related charges.
