Police 'Texting Blitz' Stops 80 Drivers On Route 106
WEST BRIDGEWATER (CBS) -- Police in West Bridgewater showed this week that they're serious about cracking down on distracted driving.
On Monday, officers stopped 80 cars on Route 106 as part of a "Texting Blitz." Drivers were issued 47 citations from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
"Everybody's texting, texting, texting," Sgt. Christopher Werner told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "It has become an epidemic."
The sting involved eight police officers - some in unmarked cruisers relayed information to officers stationed down the road about which drivers to stop.
"It's a very difficult law to enforce," Werner said. "You have to observe them on the phone."
Unlike the new wipers on, lights on law, Werner says the texting offense is not surchargable.
"I don't understand why they think windshield wiper use is more of a danger to the public than texting while driving," he said.
Police said in a Facebook post they want to send a message that texting while driving is a dangerous activity.
"It only takes a split second for tragedy to strike," police said. "Put the phone down."
