Police Response 'Dramatically Hindered' By Breakdown Lane Drivers

NEEDHAM (CBS) – Massachusetts State Police say troopers were "dramatically hindered" by cars driving in the breakdown lane as they attempted to respond to a car fire Sunday in Needham.

A two-car crash was reported on Route 128 in Needham on Sunday afternoon, causing one of the vehicles to become fully engulfed in flames.

"Responding troopers were dramatically hindered in their efforts to get to the crash scene due to misuse of the breakdown lane by the motoring public," State Police said on their Facebook page.

Police used the incident to remind drivers that breakdown lane travel is for emergencies. Drivers can also use the breakdown lane when marked as permitted, or when officers instruct that it is allowed.

"We routinely receive and appreciate a great deal of help from the public in regard to so many aspects of our law enforcement and public safety function. We would specifically appreciate your cooperation in this matter," State Police said. "The life we are trying to save next time might be yours."
