Police Reminding Drivers To Remember 'Move Over' Law

BOSTON (CBS) --- The law requires all drivers to move over a lane or slow down in traffic if they see an emergency vehicle pulled over on the side of the road.

Canton Police officer Rob Quirk says it's one of the most dangerous parts of the job, pulling a cruiser off to the side of the road, and getting out, with heavy traffic whizzing by. The danger is real.

Early Wednesday morning, one of Quirk's fellow Canton officers was hurt when his SUV was rear-ended while he worked a detail at a Route 128 construction site.

The driver was also hurt and now he will likely face charges of violating the state's Slow Down, Move Over Law.  It requires drivers to either move over or slow down when they see an emergency or maintenance vehicle with flashing lights on the side of the road.

State Police have been also trying to spread the word through social media, posting pics holding move over signs.

Officer Quirk has had his own close call.

"One day I had a car pulled over and a car came by and just brushed my arm," he said.
