Driver Charged In Fatal Charlestown Hit And Run

CHARLESTOWN (CBS/AP) – A garbage truck driver has pleaded not guilty to fleeing the scene of an accident that left a bicyclist dead in Charlestown.

A man on a bicycle was struck by a garbage truck and killed around 1:30 p.m. Thursday near Sullivan Square.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens reports

Investigators say the driver did not stop.

The victim has only been identified as a 30-year-old Chelsea man.

According to the Suffolk District Attorney's office, witness reports suggest the truck and bicycle collided as the truck turned right from Cambridge Street onto Spice Street.

Police found the truck and the driver, 41-year-old Ricky Prezioso of Swampscott, Thursday night.

Officials said Prezioso told police he thought he struck a pothole and after checking his truck farther down Spice Street he continued on his route. His lawyer says the cyclist initiated the contact.

Prezioso was arraigned Friday in Charlestown Municipal Court on a  charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

He was released on $5,000 bail but Judge Lawrence McCormick  denied a request from the Suffolk District Attorney's Office for $15,000 bail and to have Prezioso wear a GPS monitor. A request was also denied to revoke Prezioso's bail in a Woburn assault and battery case.

He is scheduled to return to court May 19.
