Officer Maloney, who was on duty at the time, was traveling westbound on Samoset when he was somehow knocked off his motorcycle. The motorcycle came to a rest about a quarter mile down the road.

"There was no obvious reason for the bike to go down," Chief Botieri said Tuesday night. "There was no other vehicles involved."

Officer Maloney was in serious condition when he was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth. He was later transported to Mass General Hospital in Boston by medical helicopter where he was pronounced dead.

State Police are assisting with the crash investigation.

"The @MassStatePolice offer sincere condolences to the Family of Officer Gregg Maloney & our brothers and sisters at the Plymouth PD," State Police Colonel Timothy Alben wrote in a tweet.

Fellow officers escorted Maloney's body from MGH to the medical examiner's office. Many local departments lined the street to salute the fallen officer.
