Phantom Gourmet: The Tap Trailhouse

BOSTON (CBS) -- If you're ever walking along Boston's historic Freedom Trail and find yourself in need of sustenance, The Tap Trailhouse is like a glowing beacon welcoming all weary travelers with hearty food served alongside some rich history.

"We want people to be on their Freedom Trail walk and either have this as a point in mind or something they've seen online or as they're passing by they see our sign, that they're really are part of the history of the neighborhood," said Executive Chef Matt Barre. "This building has been here for a really long time as well as the most of the street. And they can come and have a really interesting and cool meal while they're here. We hope it really plays into their experience while they're traveling."

Barre has developed a menu here that pays homage to the classic Yankee cooking of yesteryear, with updated dishes that still satisfy today's tastes.

"We looked at some old colonial cookbooks really focusing on some classic Boston flavors and then also focusing on some old school traditional techniques to really make this a real destination restaurant," said Barre.

So there are New England favorites like lobster rolls, baked beans, and prime rib, fresh flavors like oyster tacos, a gourmet burger, and a pumpkin whoopie pie. There's also a weekend brunch, with highlights like a build-your-own bloody Mary.

It's all served up in a cozy dining room where the brick walls are covered in plenty of old art--because just like the food, the atmosphere at The Tap Trailhouse is meant to evoke delicious memories.

"This really is a place that is about the whole dining out experience, from appetizer to entree to what I'm drinking to dessert and really having a restaurant in this area that's worth traveling to," said Barre.
