Phantom Gourmet: Swissbakers In Allston

BOSTON (CBS) -- These are the hands of a Swiss Baker. These are the treats of a Swiss Baker. And this is a place called Swissbakers.

With locations in Reading and Allston, Massachusetts, Swissbakers is completely authentic and completely addictive. Fresh-baked pretzels. Flaky croissants. Apple Tarts. Bavarian Cream Cakes. Swiss-style donuts known as Berliners.

Helen and Thomas Stohr started baking these European specialties in their home kitchen. But they've expanded into a full bakery, cafe, and catering operation, where everything is made fresh every single day.

"We want to make sure the guests have a healthy, tasty fresh food. If you come at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and you want to have your almond croissant, or your mini swirl or your Swiss Swirl, then you still want it fresh," Thomas Stohr said. "It's the most important thing. It's our philosophy. Daily freshness. It's also a reflexion of the European culture where you shop every day."

That, along with their focus on fun, smiling service, is what makes Swissbakers stand out from most bakers.

"It's celebrating food. It's like we don't have customers we have guests. It's what you have at home. Even if your lunch break is 20 minutes, this 20 minutes shouldn't be stressful... just slow down," Thomas Stohr said.

"And like we say, our food makes you feel good," Helen Stohr said.

Watch Phantom Gourmet on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 and 11 a.m. on myTV38.
