Phantom Gourmet: Pumpkin Spice Cookie Taste Test

BOSTON (CBS) -- Phantom recently purchased four packages of pumpkin spice cookies at a local supermarket. The fall flavored entrants were Dancing Deer, Keebler, Oreo, and Pepperidge Farm. See if you can guess which brand ended up at the top of the food chain.

Oreo pumpkin spice creme cookies finished in last place. Yet another offering in this brand's unrelenting onslaught of limited edition flavors, this pumpkin was downright rotten. These Oreos smell exactly like a fall scented candle, and kind of taste like one too, with no absolutely no notes of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, or anything else worth eating.

Pepperidge Farm pumpkin spice cookies (Phantom Gourmet)

A step up from there is Pepperidge Farm pumpkin spice milanos. These cookies certainly look fall-like, with an eye appealing duo of chocolate and pumpkin colored fillings. Unfortunately, great looks don't always equal a great cookie. There simply isn't enough pumpkin spice flavor happening to set this snack apart. Phantom loves milanos, but he'd rather just stick with the original.

Dancing Deer pumpkin spice cookies (Phantom Gourmet)

The runner up is Dancing Deer pumpkin spice shortbread cookies. These locally made cookies are shaped like cute little pumpkins, and made with real ingredients like cane sugar, butter, cinnamon and nutmeg. They're pleasantly crunchy, but a bit too sweet, with the sugar overwhelming the spices. Plus, this is no cheap treat: a six ounce package containing a dozen cookies costs about seven bucks.

Keebler pumpkin spice cookies (Phantom Gourmet)

At the top of the food chain is Keebler. This limited edition pumpkin spice batch of their famous fudge stripe cookies blew Phantom away like a pile of fallen leaves. The cookie itself is addictively light and crispy, with an eye appealing white icing. As for flavor, these things are off the charts, exploding with notes of clove, ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg. That's why Keebler pumpkin spice fudge stripe cookies are at the top of the food chain.
