The back injury comes at a bad time for Sandoval, who is in competition with the red-hot Travis Shaw for the starting spot at third base.
Sandoval may already be behind in the competition, as his .265 average this spring is being dwarfed by Shaw's .450 average.
If the injury does keep Sandoval out for longer than expected, it could make Farrell's decision about who to start at third base much easier.
