Owner Of Welding Company Says He's Not Responsible For Fatal Boston Fire

BOSTON (CBS) – The owner of the Malden welding company hit with a lawsuit in connection with a deadly Back Bay fire says he's not responsible.

The suit filed last month by the executor of the estate of Michael Callahan, the owner of 298 Beacon Street, targets the owners of 296 Beacon St., Oliver Realty LP; welding company D & J Iron Works of Malden and the welding company's owner Giuseppe Falcone.

After the fire, officials said welders were working on an iron hand railing behind 296 Beacon Street when the sparks "extended to a wooden structure in the rear" and eventually started the fire at 298 Beacon.

Boston firefighters Ed Walsh and Michael Kennedy died in the blaze.

Falcone says others caused the fire and he is calling for the judge to dismiss the suit.
