Police Department On Clowns: 'We Will Handle Them Accordingly'

ORONO, Maine (CBS) – After multiple clown sightings in one Maine town Monday night, police there are coming out with a stern warning for anyone caught clowning around.

"We will not tolerate anyone harassing, threatening or trespassing on property," the Orono police department said in a Facebook post. "If someone wants to do this to purposely scare people, we will handle them accordingly."

Reports of clowns trying to scare people have been coming into police departments across the country for weeks, and the trend seems to finally be hitting the northeast.

A Merrimack College dorm was shut down Monday night when someone told police they saw an armed clown on campus, but no suspicious person was ever found. A similar incident was also reported the same night at UMass-Amherst.

Orono police say as of now, there is no indication that whoever is behind the clown sightings is dangerous.
