Custodian Dies In Hazmat Incident At Plymouth School

PLYMOUTH (CBS) – A school employee died and 11 others were rushed to the hospital after an incident involving hazardous materials at Manomet Elementary School in Plymouth Monday morning.

The man who died has been identified as 53-year-old Chester Flattery of Plymouth, a custodian at the school.

Ten public safety workers who responded to the scene and one school employee were transported to a local hospital for evaluation with symptoms of possible chemical exposure.

The source of the hazmat situation is unknown, but an EMT worker was treated for carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the EMT's friend.

The building remains closed as the hazmat team attempts to identify the chemical agent.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

"Chet was an unbelievable, unbelievable person. He was a great employee," said Gary Maestas, Plymouth's Superintendent of Schools. "Every interaction I had with Chet over the years has just been outstanding. He basically owned this building. He took care of it and he took care of the people in this building. The Plymouth community will miss Chet greatly."
