Officer Dic Donohue Promoted To Transit Police Sergeant

BOSTON (CBS) – Officer Dic Donohue, who was nearly killed during the Watertown shootout in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings received a promotion on Friday.

Transit police promoted Donohue to the rank of sergeant during a ceremony. He returned to the force at the end of March.

"Sometimes I think about how crazy it was, how lucky I am to be alive and how lucky I am that certain people took certain actions," Donohue said. "You take one person out of the equation and I might not be sitting here."

Donohue was wounded on April 19, 2013, during a shootout with Boston Marathon bombing suspects Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan.

The transit officer spent about a month in Spaulding Rehabilitation recovering from his injuries.

In the two-plus years since the shootout, Donohue has used his experience as a way to raise awareness for the need to donate blood to the American Red Cross.

After being shot in Watertown, Donohue received more than 40 units of blood to save his life.

This April, he was among those in attendance at the Watertown Strong blood drive.

Donohue said he still has pain but overall feels healthy as he begins in his new role of sergeant.

"I've been working for that goal for quite a few years. I'm excited for my new position and excited to see where it takes me," he said.
