Man Fires At Police During Standoff At Norton Home

NORTON (CBS) – A man was arrested after firing at police during a standoff at a Norton home.

A woman called 911 around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday to report that she had been involved in an argument with a man inside a John Scott Boulevard home.

The caller said the man, later identified as Heath Mullett, was armed with a handgun.

As officers spoke with Mullett, the woman and a young child ran from the home, but the suspect barricaded himself inside.

A SWAT team responded to the home.

During a conversation with the Norton Police dispatcher, Mullett said he had over 500 rounds of ammunition.

While police moved into position, Mullett fired several rounds at officers from inside the home. Officers did not return fire and no one was hit, though one bullet hit a police vehicle.

Negotiators eventually convinced Mullett to surrender peacefully.

He was arrested and taken to Sturdy Hospital for evaluation.

Mullett is charged with domestic assault and battery, malicious damage over $250, discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a home, and assault with intent to murder.
