Northern Ave. Water Main Break Floods Part Of Seaport District In South Boston

BOSTON (CBS) – A water main break on Northern Avenue flooded construction sites in the Seaport District of South Boston collapsed some  pavement.

Reports came in about the break in a 30-inch water main just after 7:30 Saturday morning, the Boston Fire Department said.

The break was in the area of the former site of the Pier 4 restaurant.

Fire officials said some construction sites had to be shut down due to water in their foundations, which also required electrical service to be shut off.

A drop in water pressure because of the break also resulted in trouble alarms activating in building fire alarm systems, Boston Fire reported.

Boston Fire officials met at about 10 a.m. with Boston Water & Sewer engineers and other utility companies to review a repair plan.

Crews were able to isolate the break and stop the rupture, restoring water service to area residents.

Water & Sewer officials said there will be low water pressure in the area throughout the day but a new pipe should be in place by Saturday evening.

The road will be repaved overnight and all repairs should be completed by Sunday morning.
