North Reading DPW Workers Placed On Administrative Leave After Drug Arrest

NORTH READING (CBS) -- Several North Reading DPW workers have been placed on administrative leave after one was arrested on drug charges Friday following an investigation into an alleged drug dealer.

John McNeil, 56, of North Reading, was arrested Friday at his home and charged with four counts of possession of a class B substance (oxycodone), two counts of possession of a class B substance (oxycodone) with intent to distribute, possession of a class C substance, possession of a class C substance with intent to distribute, possession of a class D substance (marijuana) with intent to distribute, and conspiracy to violate the drug laws.

DPW worker Scott McDonough, 42, of Methuen is facing charges of possession of a class B substance (oxycodone) and conspiracy to violate drug laws. Police have not ruled out bringing more charges against him.

McDonough and several other unidentified DPW employees have been put on leave, according to a press statement released Monday morning.

In the statement, North Reading Town Administrator Michael Gilleberto says he is aware of the investigation, adding that "we will not tolerate illegal drug use by any town employee."

The town also will be conducting an internal investigation.

Police launched the drug investigation last month. It led to investigators going to McNeil's home, where they allegedly found drugs, paraphernalia, and cash.

McNeil and McDonough were arraigned Monday at Woburn District Court. They were released on $250 and $200 cash bail, respectively.

Their next court appearance is slated for May 6.
