Norfolk County Begins Fight Against Mosquitoes

BOSTON (CBS) - If you think it's too early to be thinking about mosquitoes, think again.

Helicopters were buzzing around Norfolk County Wednesday, dropping pellets in the wetlands.

The pellets will kill the mosquito larvae. "We had a warm March, and the larvae are there," said David Lawson, of the Norfolk County Mosquito Control, "but we'd normally start around this time, or a little later anyway."

And while the mosquito that carries the Zika virus isn't in Mass. yet, health officials are keeping an eye out and warning people who may be travelling down south.

"If someone travels in the areas where there's Zika, they should be aware, if they're trying to get pregnant," says State Epidemiologist Dr. Catherine Brown.

"Eighty percent of the people who contract the Zika virus don't know they have it. But those who are symptomatic have a greater risk of danger to their unborn child," Dr. Brown added.
