NH Officials Urge Caution After Ice Climber Rescue

MT. WASHINGTON, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire Fish and Game officials are using the successful rescue of an ice climber to urge other hikers to use caution.

Authorities say 32-year-old Dale Edwards of the Bronx, N.Y. got separated from her two companions when she went in search of an alternate route up the Ammonoosuc Ravine on Mount Washington.

Rescuers were called at about 5:30 Saturday night after Edwards phoned a friend in North Conway for help.

Seven rescuers located Edwards five hours later, reunited her with her companions and walked all three to the Cog Railway by 11 p.m.

Rescuers said the three climbers had appropriate clothing and gear, but failed to pack extra batteries for headlamps.

They say three of the seven rescuers had to travel more than 90 miles to join the search.
