Newton Teen Places Fourth In Youth Olympics Diving Competition

BOSTON (CBS) – A Newton diver with her eyes on the 2016 Olympics took a step in the right direction by earning a fourth-place finish in a major competition.

Gracia Leydon Mahoney, an 18-year-old Newton North High School graduate, placed fourth in the women's 3-meter springboard contest Monday at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

Leydon Mahoney is one of just two American divers competing in the Youth Olympic Games.

Diving events at the Youth Olympic Games continue through Wednesday when Leydon Mahoney will compete in the mixed international team competition.

Earlier this week, Leydon Mahoney finished eighth in the women's 10-meter competition.

Leydon Mahoney will continue her diving career and studies at Stanford University this fall with a goal of making the U.S. team for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
