Police Search For 'Polite' Robber That Held Up Newton Gas Station
NEWTON (CBS) -- Newton Police are searching for a man they say robbed a gas station with a gun Tuesday night and they want the public's help.
They said the suspect, a hispanic male about 5'8" tall, robbed the Newton Gulf Station on Beacon Street around 9 p.m.
He was armed with what police described as a "long gun."
In a surveillance tape, the suspect can be heard asking for the money in the register.
"Can you open the register now, please? Open it," the person in the video says.
Despite the somewhat polite request, police say this was a bold attempt.
"Obviously the man was very brazen, it was just before 9 o'clock, Newton Center is a busy area," says Lt. Bruce Apotheker.
Newton Police said he fled with an undetermined amount of cash. Now, they are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect. Police are asking the public to listen to the man's voice with hopes that might lead them to the suspect.
As they search, gas station owner George Audi said he's just glad no one was hurt. The robbery was a first in 30 years of business, he said.
"Absolutely it does surprise me," Audi said. "Thank God everybody's OK, no problems. It is part of them game."
There have not yet been any arrests.
