Newton Firefighters Knock Down 3-Alarm House Fire

NEWTON (CBS) – Firefighters knocked down a three-alarm fire in a Newton home early Friday morning despite freezing conditions.

Temperatures were in the single digits when firefighters responded to 182 Tremont Street at about 2:30 a.m.

All six trucks belonging to the Newton Fire Department responded to the scene. Access was difficult for firefighters, who said the house had balloon framing which allowed the flames to spread easily throughout the building.

Ice formed on trucks and throughout the area due to the frigid temperatures. Newton firefighters also had to shovel out several hydrants that were buried in snow.

By 6a.m. the fire was contained.

The fire began inside the 2.5-story single family home and flames inside the walls shot all the way up to the third floor and attic.

The family was home at the time of the fire, but they called 911 and escaped the home safely.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
