New Police Commissioner Faced With First 2 Murders Of Year On First Day

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — On the same day Boston's new police commissioner promised a crackdown on violent crime, the city had its first two homicides of the new year.

Police say a fight led to a double stabbing on  Margaretta Drive in Hyde Park at about 6 p.m. Thursday. One man was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man was placed in custody and taken to the hospital for treatment of superficial stab wounds.

Officers arrested 20-year-old William Earl of Boston and charged him with murder.  The victim's name has not been released.

Earl was arraigned Friday morning and is being held without bail.

The second homicide happened just five hours later in Roslindale, where a man was shot several times on Rowe Street just after 11 p.m. There was no word on arrests in the case.

Boston had a 13-year-low of 40 homicides in 2013.

Mayor Martin Walsh named William Evans police commissioner on Thursday.
