RMV Reveals New Mass. Driver's License Design

BOSTON (CBS) -- Massachusetts driver's licenses are getting a new look.

The new designs for Massachusetts driver's licenses and state IDs were unveiled Tuesday afternoon at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles by Registrar Erin Deveney.

The new IDs include security features that make Massachusetts "one of the states with the most secure and technologically advanced cards in the country," according to the Mass. RMV.

The designs were last updated in 2010.

Deveney also commented on Gov. Charlie Baker's signing of a bill that would make sure Massachusetts was in compliance with the federal Real ID Act. Deveney said the new IDs would include security features required by the federal law.

One of the Real ID Act-compliant features on the new licenses is a second bar code on the back of the license that includes the information printed on the front.

Starting in October 2020, Americans will be required to have Real ID cards when boarding a plane or entering a federal building.

Deveney said there's no need for residents to run to the RMV immediately, as these new licenses will be phased in over the next five years, and Mass. driver's licenses will have Real ID information in them before the October 2020 deadline.
