NH Bill Would Add Tax To Ski Lift Tickets

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A bill proposed by New Hampshire Democrats adding a tariff to residents buying ski lift tickets has divided the State House.

The Concord Monitor reports the tariff would extend the state's existing meals and rooms tax to lift tickets, adding a 9% tariff to passes.

The incentive is to generate enough revenue to fill a college scholarship fund for the middle class and vocational courses for inmates.

Democrats say it is a crafty way to bring in funding for a worthy cause, but it has angered Republican Gov. Chris Sununu.

Sununu says that if the bill were to ever reach his desk, he would veto it immediately as it is "another example of extremism of this Legislature."

The debate over the bill will play out in the Legislature in January.
