New Bedford Firefighters Help Mother Deliver Twin Girls

NEW BEDFORD (CBS) -- Emergency crews are always saving lives, but they don't usually bring new life into the world. That changed for some New Bedford medics and firefighters on Saturday.

Lt. Ken Silva and Firefighters Rich McCue, Mark Pacheco and Kevin Carvalho responded to a happier call than usual, arriving at a New Bedford home at about 6:30 a.m. to find a women in the middle of giving birth to twins.

The men helped the woman deliver baby number one, and loaded her into an ambulance so she could deliver her second child at the hospital. On the way to the hospital, though, baby number two had different plans and medics delivered her on the spot in the hospital parking lot.

New Bedford firefighters posted about the delivery on the department's Facebook page.

"What an exciting morning for everyone involved!" the post said. "Congratulations to the family and to all first responders for assisting in the delivery of these two beautiful Christmas miracles!"
