National Parks In Mass. Took In $470 Million Last Year
BOSTON (AP) — A new report shows that visitors to national parks in Massachusetts spent nearly $470 million in 2013.
The report from the National Park Service shows that nearly 9.7 million people visited national parks in the state last year, supporting nearly 6,000 jobs.
Most visitor spending was for lodging, followed by food and beverages, gas and oil, admissions and fees, and souvenirs and other expenses.
Massachusetts is home to more than a dozen national parks, including the John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site, Lowell National Historical Park, the Cape Cod National Seashore, the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park and others.
Nationally, the report shows $14.6 billion in direct spending by 273.6 million park visitors in communities within 60 miles of a national park.
