Body Of Missing Diver Recovered Off Nahant Coast

NAHANT (CBS) -- The body of a diver who went missing one mile south of Nahant has been recovered, fire officials said.

The overdue diver, a 37-year-old man, had prompted a search of the area Saturday morning.

"At 10:30 a.m, Nahant Fire Department received a call from US Coast Guard sector Boston reporting a missing diver off the coast of Nahant," said Nahant Fire Chief Michael Feinberg.

Emergency crews responded to Town Wharf after receiving a report of the missing diver around 9 a.m. The man was found unresponsive just before noon.

The waters were very choppy on Saturday. Police say the diver did not resurface. He was aboard a boat called the "Keep-ah".

Mass State Police Marine Unit and dive team, crews from the Coast Guard, the Beverly Fire Department dive team, Swampscott Fire Department, and Nahant Police assisted in the search. A Coast Guard aircraft was also sent from Air Station Cape Cod.

"After approximately an hour-and-a-half, the diver's body was recovered and brought in," Feinberg said.

The diver's identity has not been released.

Feinberg thanked rescue personnel for their efforts.

"Everyone worked efficiently to locate the victim despite very dangerous conditions on the water, and I commend them for their commitment," he said.

Massachusetts State Police and the Essex County District Attorney's office are investigating.
