'Best Friends' Cat And Dog Up For Adoption Together Through MSPCA

BOSTON (CBS) - They're the best of friends and looking for a new home, together. Leila and Kitty's original family had to bring them to the MSPCA when they were forced to move. Now the challenge is to find a special family with enough love for both pets.

They are the odd couple. A 6-year-old tabby cat named Kitty, and his pal Leila, a 2-year-old Chihuahua. "What's unique about these two is the extent to which they're bonded," said the MSPCA's Rob Halpin. Bonded because they're from the same family, a family that was forced to give them up. "Their family lost their home, and they were unable to find another home that would accommodate the pets," Halpin said.

Now they're together at the MSPCA's Adoption Center in Jamaica Plain. "All they have is each other, and we can't take that away from them now. Our hope, and in fact our resolution, is to place them in a home that agrees to take both of them together so they need never be separated," Halpin said.

It's very unusual for a dog and a cat to be surrendered from the same home. So the MSPCA has changed its regular protocol and is housing the 2 together while waiting for a new family to step up. "They love each other. They feel calm and supported when they're near each other. They're really great friends and they need each other."
