MIT Dedicates Permanent Memorial To Officer Sean Collier

CAMBRIDGE (CBS/AP) — The Massachusetts Institute of Technology dedicated a permanent memorial Wednesday in honor of campus police Officer Sean Collier, who was murdered by the Boston Marathon bombers.

Police Chief John DiFava called it "overwhelming."

The memorial is at the site where Collier was shot and killed by Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev as he sat in his police cruiser.

It features five granite walls arranged in a radial pattern resembling the spread fingers of an open hand, connected by a vault in the center where "In the line of duty, Sean Collier April 18, 2013" is etched.

A temporary memorial has been at the site since October 2013.

Designer J. Meejin Yoon said the most important part of the memorial is "the space of remembrance where the walls form the vault."

She calls it a place of "pause and reflection."
