The SUV lost control on Congress Street, crossing to the wrong side of the road before taking down a telephone pole and hitting a car parked in a driveway.

"I was asleep and I heard the most ungodly screaming you could possibly hear," neighbor Karen Schulman told reporters.

Gray was taken to Milford Hospital, then taken by helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where she later died.

There were five other teens, all around 19 years of age, in the car. They all suffered minor injuries.

"It's a holiday tragedy, it's unimaginable, " Milford Dep. Police Chief Jim Heron said.

Police said they don't believe texting, speed, or alcohol were a factor, and said the SUV's brakes may have failed.

They said they believed the teens were on their way to catch a fireworks display.
