Milford Soldier Competes For 'Best Warrior'

MILFORD (CBS) -- A local soldier is vying for the title of "Best Warrior" in the United States Army.

Spc. Kevin Shinnick is a ranger with the 75th regiment out of Fort Benning, Ga., but he says his home will always be Milford, and yes, he misses it.

"All my friends are sending me pictures of autumn and the trees are changing and I don't get to witness it," Shinnick told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey.

Shinnick has risen through at least four other competitions to become one of 28 finalists in the Army's Best Warrior Competition, which selects the best of the 14 different Army commands and puts them through a grueling four-day competition.

"To be the best warrior means you're someone of physical prowess, tactical knowledge and cultural astuteness," said Shinnick, who has spent the past 3 years in the Army. "The most challenging part has been being able to work under stress."

The winner will be announced Thursday night. Shinnick said the competition has been tough, but worth it.

"I really believe in the Army and that's a cause I hold very personal," he said. "It's almost a case of if not me, then who. I definitely want to win and represent this great organization."
