Michelle Obama Visits Dorchester Boys And Girls Club

BOSTON (CBS) – Former First Lady Michelle Obama was in Boston for part of the weekend to promote her new book, "Becoming." She stopped at the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester Saturday afternoon to talk to a group of young women.

"We were reading your book as if you wrote these stories about us," one woman said to Obama.

Obama's book focuses mostly on her life from growing up on the South Side of Chicago to her time in the White House.

"My parents didn't go to college so I went to college really without anyone helping me think about how to shape that college experience," Obama said to the group. "My advice to you guys is to understand that these four years while you are in school are for you to explore."

All of 20 young women chosen are a part of the Black Girls Rock program.

"What inspires me most about today is that she took the time to meet young women of color and really help us, and guide us a little bit, and give us an opportunity to ask questions. And allow herself sort of an anchor for us," said Nalany Guerrier, another one of the participants.

Alana Underwood is a senior at Berkley School of Music. "Being that Mrs. Obama's path was not straight, it's just been inspiring to know that my path may not be straight either but I will be successful."

Obama will be at TD Garden Saturday night, speaking at 8 p.m.

"Stretch yourself. As I say, put yourself outside of your comfort zone. Because that's when you really grow," said Obama. She also stressed the importance of self-care.

Her book has sold more than 1.4 million copies so far.
