Meadow Brook Golf Club Clubhouse In Reading Destroyed By Fire For Second Time In Nearly A Year

READING (CBS) – For the second time in nearly a year, a fire has destroyed the clubhouse at the Meadow Brook Golf Club in Reading.

Flames broke out around 5 a.m. Tuesday at the clubhouse on Grove Street. There were no sprinklers installed yet because it was under construction after the original 75-year-old building was destroyed in a fire on April 17, 2020.

The new clubhouse was set to reopen in June, but is instead a total loss for the second time in just over a year.

"Someone said lightning never strikes twice. I think we've all learned in the last 13 months lightning can strike many times over. Nothing has surprised me," said Kate Coppins, a Board of Governors member at Meadow Brook.

"We're fortunate it's member-owned club. It's not a private-owned club. It's a thriving membership. This club has been around since 1898. So it's been a part of the North Shore community, the greater Reading area. We'll persevere. Right now it hurts. We'll rebuild, we'll come back."
