McAdam: Knee Injury And DL Stint 'A Handy Excuse' For Clay Buchholz To Fix Himself
BOSTON (CBS) - The biggest problem for Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz is between his ears, not this "hyperextended knee" according to Sean McAdam.
The CSNNE baseball insider joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Gresh & Zolak show Thursday morning to discuss the struggling pitcher.
"I don't think the knee is the primary problem. I think the knee is a handy excuse. Not to say that he didn't tweak it or hyperextend it the other day in Atlanta, but could he pitch through this if everything else was okay? Almost certainly. I think this is an opportunity to sort of take a time out, get his mechanics straight and as much as anything get his head straight. He has no confidence out there. You can see that in body language. You can hear it in some of the answers that he provides.
"I think the knee is the least of Clay Buchholz's and the Red Sox's concerns," said McAdam.
Turn back the calendars exactly one year and at this point in the season Buchholz was 7-0 with a 1.73 earned run average and well on his way to being the American League's starter in the All Star Game.
Now, he's 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA.
Red Sox fans hope when Buchholz returns from the DL that both his head and knee are fixed.
