MBTA Fare Hikes Take Effect For Subway, Buses, Commuter Rail
BOSTON (AP) – Commuters are paying more to take public transportation in the Boston area.
The MBTA's new fare hikes take effect Tuesday and boost the cost of riding the subway, bus system and commuter rail by about 5 percent.
Bus and subway fares are increasing by a dime, to $1.60 and $2.10 per ride, respectively, with the use of a CharlieCard.
Commuter rail prices are increasing to anywhere from $2.10 to $11.50, depending how far out from Boston commuters get on board.
The fare increases are projected to raise Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority fare revenue by approximately 4 percent, or up to $24 million. A small ridership loss of less than 1 percent is also expected.
