Slow-Speed Derailment Causes Morning Delays On Commuter Rail

BOSTON (CBS) – An MBTA commuter rail train experienced a "slow-speed upright derailment" Tuesday morning near Sullivan Square, causing delays for multiple trains during the morning commute.

Rockport Train 102 derailed around 7 a.m. less than a mile from North Station. About 300 people were on board, but no one was injured.

Just after 8 a.m. a locomotive arrived to assist the disabled train complete its trip to North Station. The train car that was derailed remains in the area of Sullivan Square while crews attempt to decide the best way to re-rail it.

As a result of the derailment, delays were caused for Newburyport, Rockport, and Haverhill line trains.

"We appreciate our passengers' patience and apologize for this inconvenience. Passengers traveling today should stay connected to our customer service updates for train information," Keolis said in a statement.

Frances Noone had a frustrating commute as a result.

"People were standing. It's kind of tiring, and everyone was just wondering what's going on and everyone was sharing information," she said. "At this point, I've done all this, I'm trying to just get to work. And really I just want to get to bed."
