Massachusetts Woman Killed In NY Car Crash

RICHFIELD, N.Y. (AP) — State police say a Massachusetts woman is dead and a Vermont woman is recovering from injuries suffered when their car crashed off a rural upstate New York road and landed in a stream.

Troopers say 20-year-old Kaitlin Mercier of Huntington, Massachusetts, was driving east on Route 20 around 7:30 a.m. Thursday when she drifted onto the shoulder and hit the end of a guiderail in the Otsego County town of Richfield, 65 miles west of Albany.

The car became airborne, overturned and landed in two feet of water in a stream.

Troopers say 22-year-old Amanda Conley of Brattleboro, Vermont, climbed out, made it to the roadway and flagged down help.

Mercier was found dead inside the vehicle.

Conley was treated for a broken leg at Bassett Medical Center in nearby Cooperstown.

Troopers say the women were returning from a visit to Niagara Falls.
