Mass. Officials Cracking Down On Underage College Drinking
BOSTON (AP) — The state is hoping to crack down on underage drinking on college campuses.
The Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission says it has launched an annual initiative called Operation Safe Campus.
The operation primarily involves monitoring of bars and liquor stores near college campuses that have had problems in the past with minors who buy liquor with fake IDs, or through adults who purchase the alcohol for them.
Investigators say they contact the parents of any students caught trying to buy alcohol and find that many weren't even aware that their children were drinking.
ABCC says it caught more than 200 minors last year and confiscated 122 cases of beer.
State Treasurer Deb Goldberg, whose office oversees the agency, says the program helps prevent underage drinking and deter bars and package stores from selling to minors.
