Mass. Bill Would Make Official Memorial For Gold Star Families

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts could soon have an official monument honoring military families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty.

A legislative committee is scheduled to hear a bill on Tuesday that would formally designate the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in Fall River as the state's official Gold Star memorial.

The measure was sponsored by Democratic Rep. Alan Silvia of Fall River.

Construction on the memorial in Bicentennial Park began last year. It's being built with private donations.

Organizers of the effort say there are few monuments in America that recognize the pain and sacrifices of military families.

The monument includes a cutout in the silhouette of a person saluting and depicts families grieving the loss of loved ones in war.
