Mass. Treasury To Auction Off Abandoned Property

BOSTON (CBS) -- Gold coins and collectible vintage cards are among the valuable items that the State Treasury will auction off in May.

Each year, the Treasury collects and sells abandoned items, to raise money for the state.

"This is property that has come out of safety deposit boxes if it has been abandoned for at least nine years," State Treasurer Steven Grossman told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens.

This year's auction will include an 18K gold Omega watch appraised at $4,800 and a set of Canadian Beaver coins valued at $10,500.

The items will be auctioned off online, beginning May 3.

"We use eBay because it's a global platform," said Grossman.

The 2013 auction of unclaimed property garnered over $500,000 for the state. The treasurer expects similar results this year.
