Mass Pike Shut Down In Charlton Following Crash Involving Two Trucks

CHARLTON (CBS) – A crash involving two tractor-trailers forced the eastbound side of the Mass Pike to shut down, resulting in severe traffic delays early Friday morning.

The crash took place around 3 a.m. at the Brookfield Road overpass. Neither driver was injured.

As a result, the eastbound side of the road was shut down. Eastbound traffic was backed up all the way to Interstate 84 while westbound traffic is snarled into Auburn.

Police say one truck came in contact with the center guardrail and jackknifed.

A second truck then became wedged between the truck and guardrail, rolled over and caught fire.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, one eastbound lane reopened around 6:15 a.m.

As of 7:30 a.m., the charred remains of one truck remained in the road. About one hour later, two lanes were opened for traffic while one remained closed.

Cleanup is expected to last until around 11 a.m.

While stuck in traffic resulting from the crash, a pregnant woman went into labor. Birth did not appear to be imminent, but she needed to be transported to UMass Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
