'Absolutely No Traffic!' Pike Commute Without Toll Booths A Breeze For Many

BOSTON (CBS) – Drivers braced for Armageddon on the Mass. Pike. Instead, they were treated to one of the easiest workday trips in a while.

Monday morning featured the first rush-hour commute since all-electronic tolling took effect on the Pike Friday night. As crews continue to demolish the toll booths, many worried that the traffic diversions would create a nightmare backup on the roads.

Judging from traffic reports and the reaction on social media, it seems like many listened to transportation officials' warnings and stayed home if they could.

A reporter for The Boston Globe, ready for the worst, described her commute as "hilariously smooth."

Will the easy rides continue on the Pike? It remains to be seen.

"We had a good morning, but all that could change," Highway administrator Thomas Tinlin said.
