Mass. Man Drives Wrong Way, Jumps Into Water After Crash

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Police in Rhode Island have arrested a Massachusetts man they say drove the wrong way on Interstate 95, crashed into another vehicle head-on, then ran away and jumped into the water in an attempt to escape.

Authorities say 40-year-old Francois Garand of Somerset, Massachusetts, drove his SUV south in the I-95 northbound lanes just after midnight Friday.

They after the crash, he fled on foot and jumped into the water. He was apprehended a short time later.

Police say he is charged with drunken driving, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Garand, his passenger, and the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Garand is scheduled to be arraigned Friday. It's unclear if he has a lawyer.
