Mass. Lottery Raked In Near-Record $971 Million Profit In Past Year

BOSTON (AP) — Officials say Massachusetts State Lottery tickets were sold at yet another record-setting pace over the last 12 months.

State Treasurer Steven Grossman, whose office oversees the lottery, said the estimated $971 million in profits for the fiscal year that ended June 30 exceeded expectations by $34 million.

Net profits from the lottery are returned to cities and towns in the form of unrestricted local aid.

Grossman, a Democratic candidate for governor, said the lottery racked up its third consecutive year of record sales at $4.86 billion. The profit was the second largest of any year, behind the $983 million recorded in the 2012 fiscal year.

The lottery awarded more than $3.5 billion in prize money in the just completed fiscal year, down slightly from the previous year.
