'Wonka Bars,' 'Nerds Ropes' In Huge Bust Of Pot-Laced Candy Seized By Peabody Police
PEABODY (CBS) – Peabody police arrested two men and made a major seizure of "illegal marijuana products" over the weekend. Photos posted on the department's Facebook page showed boxes full of marijuana-laced candy, including Wonka bar and Nerds Ropes lookalikes.
The products are estimated to have a street value of $1.2 million. Neighbors assisted an investigation that led to the arrest of Gary Cioffi of John Road, police said. Marco Sosa was also arrested after he was seen entering the home with a black backpack.
Both men were arraigned on Monday. Cioffa was held on $100,000 cash bail while Sosa's bail was set at $2,500.
Other items seen in photos from the Peabody seizure include bags that resemble Rice Krispies Treats and "Wicked Wormz."
"It appears the Black Market is still viable," Peabody police wrote.
Prosecutors said police seized 119 pounds of raw marijuana, 6,365 pre-rolled blunts dipped in THC oil and 4148 THC-infused edibles.
Cioffi is a father of two children who live in the Peabody home.
"There are small children that live around here that play with their children. If their kids ever got into that, it could be a tragedy," said neighbor Ann Jwanowski.
The bust comes as police departments nationwide have warned parents to be "vigilant" about their children's Halloween candy. Police in Pennsylvania earlier this month seized bags of Nerds Ropes containing THC.
