The man was struck by a Ford pickup truck, driven by a 45-year-old Hudson, N.H. man.

A MedFlight was requested, but due to the victim's unstable condition, it was cancelled, police say.

The man was rushed to Lowell General Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 5 p.m.

He had been visiting family before the accident.

"This is a tragic situation involving the loss of life in our community," Chelmsford Police Chief James Spinney said in a statement released Saturday.

"On behalf of the entire Town of Chelmsford, my most sincere condolences go out to the victim's family during this incredibly difficult time."

The victim won't be identified until his family has been notified.

Police say a preliminary investigation shows the man was using a crosswalk when he was struck.

It's unclear if the "safe-to-cross" light was on while he was attempting to cross.

Chelmsford and State Police are investigating.

No charges have been filed against the truck driver.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected.
