Man In Standoff With Police Outside Springfield Hospital

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Springfield police say a hospital is in precautionary lockdown while police negotiate with an armed man threatening to take his life in a parking lot outside.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Delaney said in a statement on the department's Facebook page Tuesday night the man shot his wife in West Springfield after an argument, and brought her Baystate Medical Center's emergency room.

Delaney said the distraught man returned to his car, and was inside the vehicle Tuesday night with a gun to his head while police negotiated with him.

Delaney said the woman is in stable condition and expected to recover.

He said no one else has been hurt and no one in the hospital is in danger.

Springfield and state police also were positioned along a perimeter fence.
